

Solaris, the unsung hero, is taking northern viticulture by storm. If we can get familiar with the variety, then Solaris could make a name for itself as the new English white wine.
Solaris is a complex hybrid grape which includes Riesling and Pinot Gris in its heritage, so it’s from good stock and therefore produces clean high acidity wines, with flavours of elderflower, gooseberry, apple, lemon and grapefruit, and when riper you get pears and apricots,
It is great for making fresh clean white wines through to new wave orange wines.

Noble varities such as Pinot Gris have been planted and used to create award winning wines from the region, with a wine from the region winning the overall UK award for a white wine.
Ortega, Bacchus and Madeline Angevine have found themselves at home in the Yorkshire climate and used to create fantastic single varities or interesting blends. This herbaceous and floral aromas create some unique wines from our region.
The PIWI grape Phoenix is also now planted in a number of vineyards and is again proving itself to be a grape with an aromatic profile, which includes floral and Muscat-like scents, elderflower, and herbaceous notes.
Chardonnay and Seyval Blanc are starting to create grapes suited to complex still white wines as the warming climate helps create riper grapes in our region. The use of oak and malolactic fermentations creating fuller bodied wines.

The geology and climate are making Yorkshire the next place to for delicious sparkling wines. The classic method using Chardonnay and Pinot Noir has allowed Yorkshire to create wonderful award winning sparkling that are aged and presented as you would expect.
Yorkshire is also creating special sparkling with Solaris, Seyval Blanc grapes in the blend and also using Pinot Noir Precose and Rondo to create rose and red sparkling wines.

Yorkshire is making a case for producing quality UK red wines using PIWI varieties. The use of Rondo, Regent, Divico, Cabernet Cortis and other PIWI grapes means we can get ripe grapes with rich flavour profiles which lend themselves to producing great wines with character. These have been used as single variety wines or blended to creating a range of wines from light refreshing reds to bold fuller bodied wines.
We are also now at the vanguard of driving the use of Gamay, Pinot Noir, Pinot Noir Precose, Merlot and Cabernet Franc in northern UK as the climate works in our favour in recent years, We are starting to see Bordeaux , Burgundy and Loire style wines now emerging.

Yorkshire has been leading the way on producing new and innovative wines such as Orange wines made from Solaris
We are also expermenting with new PIWI varieties such as Sauvignac and Souvignier Gris to see what can be produced in Yorkshire.
